Stevo rolls back the years against the Aussies

Sky Sports presenter Mike "Stevo" Stephenson rolled back the years on Tuesday night when he turned out for a London Select side in a Rugby League Masters game against the touring Australian Masters team.

Masters is a strictly social version of Rugby League for players aged 35 or over with the rules slightly modified to cater for older participants.

"Stevo" said: “I was a touch stiff the following morning but had a great time although I never thought I would pull on the boots ever again - I had to borrow a pair!

“I encourage anyone wanting to play this Masters game, it was a fantastic feeling just running - well, more like hobbling and walking -  onto the pitch and being involved once again in the greatest game of all.“

There are no winners, no champions and no Cup finals in Masters Rugby League which is enjoying a huge increase in the number of participants across the country. It is all about the spirit of the game and the most important rule is that everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number.

RFL League for All Officer Pete Longbottom said: “We’re seeing a big increase in the number of Rugby League clubs around the country setting up Masters teams, which is fantastic.

“Masters is a great way to stay involved in Rugby League and to continue playing whatever your age and the social aspect is very important.”

Medway Dragons hosted the Australian Masters side in their final fixture of a tour of Great Britain which has seen them play five games in total, including one full Test Match against Great Britain.

The evening kicked off with a four-team Touch Rugby League tournament made up of teams from the local Medway community and was thoroughly enjoyed by all players and spectators present.

Masters in London has gained great momentum over the past 10 months and now there are five clubs with a Masters setup with a view to expand this even further.
